We are really looking forward to 2019. Since our inception in 2016, we have been been posting essays and articles that reflect the insights of Illinois prisoners about prison life, culture and conditions. This year we will concentrate on the thoughts and ideas of IDOC prisoners concerning a very important topic, REFORM. The Federal Legislature ended 2018 by passing a prison reform package called “First Steps” which was passed with overwhelming support of both parties.
We hope hope this law motivates the Illinois Legislators to address the serious problems that make Illinois prisons the most ineffective in America. This fact is evidenced by the outgoing Governor Rauner’s opinion piece in the October 14, 2016 edition of The Chicago SunTimes newspaper. Governor Rauner said, “Once offenders enter our current justice system, they experience a process that is out of date, costly, inhumane and ineffective. That doesn’t work or our taxpayers, it doesn’t work for our employees and it doesn’t work for offenders.”
We are hopeful that newly elected Governor Pritzker’s administration continues the push for prison reform for Illinois prisons.
